01/06/2017 - Apps for surveyors: 2017 edition

We use our phones for far more than just making calls and sending messages. We asked professionals in our global LinkedIn group for their suggestions of the best apps for surveyors — do you agree with their choices?

mobile phone

Camcard, Craig JL MacDonald MRICS

"I still find myself raving about this one. The fact that I have the app on my personal phone and work phone, and CamCard syncs the scanned cards and the contacts between them, is awesome.

"My manager asked me to update a spreadsheet with details from around 100 cards. I CamCarded each one, let my outlook sync, and exported the contacts to Excel."

Trello, David Carter MRICS

"If you're managing projects (as a team or individually), Trello is a great productivity tool that provides snapshots of your workflow, and it integrates perfectly with Pipedrive, a sales pipeline tracker."

Site Audit Pro, Paul Currie AssocRICS

"From a construction perspective we use this iPad app to capture photographs as part of our site surveys, add captions and narrative. We then have the ability to convert the gathered information to a PDF report complete with personal front cover. This means our clients get the reports real time and cuts down office time for our engineers. Plus, it still looks professional."

Todoist, Phil Power MRICS

"I have been using 'Todoist' as an aide memoire for the last 18 months and find it invaluable. It makes note-taking very easy. It uploads to the inbox on a mobile phone and auto-syncs with my iPad and PC, allowing brief notes during inspections meetings, which can be fully developed when I'm back at my desk. A great paperless solution."

Wunderlist, Alfredo C. Roach

"I'm using Wunderlist from Microsoft to manage my to-do-lists. It synchronizes well with calendars apps, such as Google and Outlook; thus, it integrates both scheduling and to-do-list tools. You may also share your list with other users and even chat with them within the tool."

iAuditor, Richard Mitchell

"iAuditor is great for creating health and safety audit templates and there is a great range of public templates to use too."

Workflow, Jamie McNeil MRICS

"Workflow on iOS is an app that allows you to create your own mini apps or workflows. Most are for fun, but some have good business uses."

Flipboard, RICS Digital Content Editor (Social Channels) Neil Brown

I find this app incredibly useful for keeping up with the latest built environment news. Users can set up dedicated streams for particular topics — building surveying for example — meaning that you get only the content you're really interested in.
